How to spring clean without causing your cat anxiety, according to an expert
Keep your feline happy with these five simple tips!

Spring is finally here, and with the winter behind us it’s that time of year when we start to think about giving the house a good clean and maybe doing some redecorating too.
But while it can be good for us to change things around, whether you’re using one of the best vacuum cleaners for pet hair, simply rearranging furniture, or doing some painting, our pets don’t always like it when things are different.
Cats in particular much prefer routine and the status quo – whether it’s sticking to the best cat food or keeping the kitchen layout the same – and spring cleaning can cause them anxiety.
So, Jimmy Bratley, veterinary practitioner for Feliway, has offered five tips so we can ensure our homes are clean while also keeping our feline friends happy and worry-free – let’s take a look.
1. Take it slow when moving furniture
“If possible, make changes gradually,” advises Bratley. “Don't move everything all at once, or they will get confused. Make the changes gradually over a period of time so that your cat has longer to adjust.”
2. Create their new environment carefully
If you need to move your cat’s resources, try putting additional ones in a new location first, before moving the originals, to let them get used to both.
“You can then remove the original ones without them noticing too much,” says Bratley, “And they'll know where they need to go to eat, drink, scratch their posts, nap, or use the litter box.”

3. Allow them to explore
Let your cat explore slowly – they’ll want to inspect the new furniture and leave their own scent. Put one of the best scratching posts near the furniture to redirect them just in case they might be tempted to smell as well as scratch!
4. Keep them cozy
“Try and keep a cushion or a blanket they are comfortable with, nearby or on the new furniture,” recommends Bratley. “This will hold familiar smells for them and make them more at home with the changes.”
5. Clean away from your cat
Your cat will thank you if you do your best to clean when your cat isn’t in the room. The noise and activity that comes with cleaning can cause cats stress – the vacuum cleaner in particular is often unpopular with our kitties!
Above all, it’s important that we keep our cats safe, so check labels to find pet-safe cleaning products and opt for natural alternatives, such as baking soda and vinegar, when practical to avoid harsh chemicals. Always store cleaning products out of your cat’s reach, too!
One aspect of cleaning that we cat parents don’t enjoy but need to do is sorting the litter tray. Thankfully, these vet-approved cat litter hacks will make life easier for you.
